about
I'm Dante Cesa, student at UCI. You might know me from Propel, Integnology, as the former Engadget intern or from one other project I can't quite talk about right now. When I'm not working, you can find me on PCH, exploring food in LA or taking pictures.

    (minor) Observations from the homeland

    Swiss flag
    In no particular order.
    • Europeans Swiss stare — a lot.
    • You cannot plug a toilet — no matter how hard you try.
    • Birds chirp early and often.
    • Mmm, non particulate diesel.
    • Too many Audi's — especially of the C5 variety.
    • MiTo's are also (unexpectedly) popular.
    • Road surfacing (in both cities & mountains), is superb.
    • Beige leather shoes are common — as are green and red (?) pants.
    • Majority of women have blonde (dyed) hair.
    • UMTS networks are robust.
    • Unlike AT&T, you can buy 2 SIMs for one phone #.
    • Bottled water is an assumption, not a luxury (asking for water in a restaurant ≠ tap water).

Switching graphics cards on the Unibody MacBook Pro

I had always thought toggling between "Better battery life" and "Higher performance" on my first-gen (late 2008) unibody MacBook Pro would result in the 9400M being entirely powered down. We're presented with radio buttons in System Preferences, not an additional checkbox... right?

Wrong. As it turns out, that is just not the case. Considering the 9400M is a standard soldered piece of the MCP79 chipset, its continuous power draw isn't really all that surprising.

But, what is surprising is the variance in juice being drawn. Notice how the 9400M's line is an identical reproduction of the 9600M's, albeit several times smaller.

Going forward, I'll be thinking twice before switching on the 9600M GT while on battery power.
